MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

Macias was Gibraltar’s first gambling regulator, who represented the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner during the International Association of Gambling Regulators (IAGR) and the Gaming Regulator Regulator European Forum. Here, he established international common standards for online and remote casinos.

Through a collaboration with HM Government of Gibraltar and the University of Gibraltar, Macias at GBGA helped to launch the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gambling (CERG) within the University of Gibraltar. This multidisciplinary institute aims to study etiological factors that contribute towards problem gambling.

Through another collaboration with the CERG, Marcias at GBGA established a number of seminars during European Safer Gambling Week. These gave a platform for academics from across Europe and North America to discuss responsible gambling, and ways to reduce problem gambling.

In March 2021, the GBGA also announced that it had finished the set-up of its new registered charity, the Gibraltar Gambling Care Foundation (GGCF). The GGCF would provide funding for research into problem gambling.

EMPLOYMENT

Following the departure of Paul Foster, CEO of the GBGA, the company decided to reconfigure the role and appoint Macias as the Secretary General of the company. Macias had previously worked for the company for several years, from January 2021, as the Director of Operations.

Alongside his role as Secretary General for the GBGA, Macias is also listed as the Director for Brinsop Limited, a compliance consultancy service situated within Gibraltar. Macias founded the gambling regulator in 2018 and continues to be the face of the company.

Prior to these positions, Marcias worked in compliance across a number of different companies. After joining William Hill in October 2019, Marcias was responsible for the UK Online division as the Director of Compliance.

Before this, he managed Lottoland’s compliance and regulations, as its Head of Compliance and Money-Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO). Marcias has also been the Compliance Officer for NetEnt, Gala Coral and a Regulatory Officer for the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission.

For a period of seven years, between 2006 and 2014, Marcias was the Gambling Regulator for Policies and Operators for the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority.

Here, Marcias was responsible for assisting the Gambling Commissioner in the designing, development and implementation of policies and regulations. He would also review complaints against operators, as well as any suspicious activity reports, and determine any actions deemed necessary to take against them.
