Alberta’s iGaming Market Opens With 22 Platforms, Dozens More Await Launch
Some of the most recognized online operators, such as FanDuel and DraftKings, were among the 22 platforms that went live on July 13.
Alberta’s iGaming market officially opened on Monday, with 22 platforms going live on the first day of the province’s long-awaited multi-license framework, including major brands such as FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, BetMGM and Caesars.
The launch makes Alberta the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to introduce a regulated multi-operator online gambling market. That ended the province’s monopoly model, under which Play Alberta was the sole legal online gambling platform. The government-run site remains available alongside the new commercial operators.

AiGC celebrated the launch at Edmonton’s Royal Glenora Club with a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside industry executives, stakeholders and government officials.
Alberta is taking an important step forward with the launch of a regulated iGaming market,” Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally said in a statement. “Our focus has been clear from the start: to protect Albertans, especially young people, and ensure that those who choose online gaming can do so in a safe and responsible environment.”
AiGC said approximately 70% of Alberta’s online gambling activity previously occurred on unregulated offshore sites, where player protections were inconsistent.
The Alberta iGaming Corporation was built with a clear mandate: To implement a sound, well-governed online gaming market that puts Albertans first,” AiGC CEO Dan Keene said. “This was never about growing the iGaming market, but channelizing and protecting Albertans [who] choose to participate.”
Under Alberta’s new framework, all approved operators must meet responsible gambling requirements, including age verification, deposit limits, time limits and self-exclusion tools.
Under the framework, operators will pay 20% tax on their net revenue. The proceeds will flow to Alberta’s General Revenue Fund, with 2% allocated to First Nations and 1% to socially responsible initiatives, including research into gambling addiction and mental health treatment programs.

Analysts Predict Strong Growth
Industry analysts have projected that Alberta could quickly become one of Canada’s largest regulated online gambling markets.
According to H2 Gambling Capital, Alberta’s gross gaming revenue is projected to reach C$1.7 billion during the province’s second year of regulation, generating nearly C$2.8 billion in fewer than two calendar years.
H2 also expects Alberta’s regulated market to significantly increase channelization, with the share of online gambling taking place on regulated sites rising from roughly 32% today to 87% in the coming years. The projection broadly mirrors Ontario, where more than 90% of online gamblers used regulated sites during the most recent reporting period.
While Ontario is expected to remain Canada’s largest regulated online gambling market, H2 said Alberta shows strong potential, particularly on a per-capita basis.
